Gabby Malpas at Platform72

Yes!  My trays were featured in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday 12 April!
There are 5 designs to choose from and they are a very limited edition.

I am delighted to be showing work at Platform72 in their 'small spaces' exhibition.  All works are priced under $500 (mostly in the range of about $250 - $400), and there are some lovely works for sale.  They are also available online from their website.

I took my niece along to the opening at Central Park, Chippendale on Friday night.

I should also mention that my scarves and trays are available exclusively online from their store from now until 11 May - here at Platform72.

Winter scarves: dyed wool and printed silk and silk batik

So the cooler days of autumn are here in Sydney. It'll never be as cold here as a European winter but there will still be days where a scarf will be useful.

I've been experimenting with wool mix fabrics I've found in charity stores and recycling centres, mixing them with previously dyed/printed fabric and batik silk fabric from Indonesia. If I dip dye the fabric you get a graduated effect which works nicely with textured wool.

Here are two:
The silver screen print was taken from an old natural history print of coral and I printed this in a friend's workshop in London circa 1997. I like to think I'm channelling a bit of Timney Fowler.

These are for sale - they will go to Bundeena markets or you can contact me to buy.

Indonesian silk batik, sari and dip dyed silk and wool mix scarves

Now that the weather is getting cooler, my thoughts have turned towards scarves. Since winter coats are usually dull in colour, I aimed for bright, rich hues and patterns to lend a little 'oomph'.

The Indonesian silk batik fabric in the middle and top image came from my Balinese haul last year. The pink Chinese silk brocade was bought in Patan, Nepal. There's a sliver of acid-hued Rajasthani sari fabric in there too and the dip dyed wool mix and silk fabrics were done by yours truly.... I used a cut starfruit to print the silver stars on the turquoise and brown dyed silk.

Phew.

watercolour silk scarves

I've made some silk scarves along the lines of the little pink and blue artworks. I like using those silk paints - the ones that you iron to set the colours. Oh yes, they have little splashes of silver as well. I know I should have ironed the scarf before taking a photo but I didn't think you'd mind too much.

I'm trying to achieve a watercolour effect on fabric. Fabric makes it a bit more interesting - as the paint bleeds into the weave, tiny lines of colour appear.
